If you’re looking to take on friendly trails in the Valrico area for day hikes or easy walks, here are a few hiking trails in the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve.
- Edward Medard Park and Reservoir: Many consider the Edward Medard Park and Reservoir to be the main attraction. It’s one of the largest regional parks, featuring 700-acres of trails and easy walks, not to mention it’s dog-friendly. The boardwalk fishing pier leads to an observation tower just across the reservoir. Other activities include boating, inline skating, equestrian riding, camping and more.
- Green Swamp East Tract: The Green Swamp East Tract features 60 miles of multi-use trails and 31 miles of Florida National Scenic Trail. This section allows hunting, but you will need to contact FWC for information about license requirements and permits. These rules and regulations must be observed throughout the year.
- Brooker Creek Headwaters Nature Preserve: The Brooker Creek Headwaters Nature Preserve is the largest area of these contiguous natural habitats that remain in northwest Hillsborough County. With public ownership of the preserve, this important wildlife habitat and the site’s wetlands remain protected. This location features hiking, bicycling, and picnic areas.
- Chassahowitzka River and Coastal Swamps: The Chassahowitzka River and Coastal Swamps is part of a large greenway of public lands that protect the Chassahowitzka Swamp ecosystem and wildlife resources. The tributaries and springs are known locally for their sport-fishing and crabbing, while the vast expanse of salt marsh, hardwood swamps, crystal clear springs, and river are a canoeist’s paradise. If you would prefer to stay on dry land, this dog-friendly location is also a great spot for bird watching, hiking, camping, bicycling, and picnics with the family.
