We’ve got two kinds of new muscle cars at Stingray Chevrolet. We sell new Chevy Camaro models as well as the vaunted Chevy Corvette. As we talk about the differences between the Camaro vs. Corvette, keep in mind that these two classic American sports cars are built for speed and performance, but also for two different segments. The Camaro is more affordable and roomier, while the Corvette is luxurious and more compact for drivers on Lakeland and Valrico roads.
Take a look at more details as we talk about the Chevy Corvette vs. the Camaro in our guide.
The Chevy Corvette started in 1953 with a somewhat large and slightly boxy model. Since then, there have been eight generations of the luxury sports car that continually gets better and better. In the mid-2000s, Corvettes incorporated a massive 7.0L V8 engine for the first time.
Meanwhile, the Chevy Camaro began in 1967 after a concept car in 1964. The impetus for Chevy’s new muscle car? The popularity of the Ford Mustang followed the post-war period, when aircraft engines were converted to powerplants in cars. The Camaro and another GM product, the Pontiac Firebird, were very similar until the Pontiac brand retired in 2009.
The Camaro’s sales figures have dropped in recent years. In 2012, there were more than 91,000 units sold. By 2022, there were just less than 25,000 models sold. 1977 was a banner year for the Chevy Camaro when it outsold the Mustang by 65,000 units. The Camaro has sold nearly 5.6 million cars.
Meanwhile, the Chevy Corvette is a bit more selective in its production due to its higher-quality materials and workmanship. The highest production year was 1979 with more than 53,000 units produced. In 2022, there were 34,510 made.
Both the Camaro and Corvette use the same engine, a 6.2L V8 engine. The Camaro uses the LT1, while the Corvette uses the LT2 version. The engine generates 495 horsepower with the ability to cover a quarter mile in 11.2 seconds in a drag race.
