The Corvette Stingray is a classic going through a modern resurgence. The curved lines of the hood and small trunk were popular during the second and third generations, called Corvette C2 and Corvette C3, respectively. While the C2 Stingray had curves along the hood, the C3’s body style was patterned after a Mako shark, one of the fastest predators in the open sea, with even more drastic curvatures as if it was cutting through the air. Whether you favored a hardtop, T-top, or convertible, people used the word “Stingray” and “Corvette” interchangeably due to the Stingray’s popularity. Some of the earliest Stingrays, in C2, are considered some of the most collectible sports cars in the world.
After taking a 25-year hiatus, the Stingray made a comeback in the mid-2010s for a new generation of enthusiasts with the C7 and C8 generations and beyond with powerful and modern V8 engines.
The C4 saw a major redesign with flatter and wider hoods. The curved shark fins were gone. But the pop-up headlights were still there, as was the stylish technology of LCD numeral displays on the dashboard. These were also popular because many models were also convertibles.
By the end of this generation, Corvettes came with run-flat tires and improved traction control. These models also utilized a keyless entry system, which was somewhat new on vehicles of the time.
The C8 Corvette is the latest generation of the sports car, and it’s a hit with enthusiasts. Less than 5% of the parts in a C8 Corvette were found in the previous generation, making the flashy sports car almost completely new. These cars are a first for the brand, with the premier of a rear mid-engine configuration, generating 495 hp with eight cylinders. Other firsts: no manual transmissions, retractable hard-tops, and hybrid powertrains.
