How to Remove a Car Battery

Auto Mechanic Replacing Car Battery

Removing a car battery is easier than you might think if you’re new to it. Your car’s battery ignites your spark plugs, starting your engine every time you drive down Lakeland roads. Learn how to remove a car battery below with our easy guide, and then learn how to remove corrosion from a car battery.

Before Removing a Car Battery

Taking out a car battery puts you at some risk of electric shock, and you should never touch a car battery terminal without insulated work gloves on. We also recommend safety goggles from any corrosion. Never attempt to remove a car battery when your car is running, and make sure your car is off.

It’s also a good idea to follow these steps:

  • Use zip ties to keep cables in their proper places. You do not want your cables to touch because of the risk of sparks and even explosions.
  • Cover the positive battery cable end with a cloth once it is removed to avoid the risk of metal-to-metal contact.
  • Don’t wear any jewelry or metal to avoid electrocution.
  • Work outside or in a well-ventilated area/garage.

How to Remove a Car Battery Step-By-Step

Before getting started, we always recommend checking your owner’s manual for specific information relating to your vehicle

  1. Make sure your car is off, pop open the hood, and find the negative battery terminal on your battery. It should have a black plastic cover and/or a minus sign.
  2. Locate the bolt head of the negative terminal and, with a wrench or pliers, hold it steady.
  3. Use another set of pliers or a wrench to remove the nut.
  4. Pull off the negative cable and place it safely away from the battery.
  5. Repeat the above steps for the positive cable and be careful to ensure that the two battery cables do not touch!
  6. If the battery is held by a securing bracket, use your pliers or wrench to take out the screws and bolts that hold it in place.
  7. Lift the battery straight out of the bracket. The battery will be heavier than you think, and it’s important to hold it steady and far away enough from your body so that it doesn’t come in contact with your skin.

All vehicles are different, but our service center can also help you take care of your Chevrolet vehicle’s battery if you’re unsure of removing your car battery yourself!

How Many Volts is a Car Battery?

About 12.6 volts or higher for a fully charged battery, but when the engine is running, it should go up to 13.7 to 14.7 volts.

Are you curious about taking out a car battery because your battery seems to be working inconsistently? Take a look at these signs to check on your battery’s voltage:

  • Start your car and turn on your headlights.
  • If your headlights are dimmer than usual, your battery may not be holding as much voltage as it should.
  • If the lights get brighter when revving the engine, the alternator may be producing some current, but not enough current when idling to keep the battery charged.
  • If your lights are normal when both on idle and when revving the engine, your lights are most likely just fine.
