Why Are My Brakes Grinding?

You’re driving through Lakeland and you start to notice your brakes making grinding noises sometimes. Maybe it happens more when you’re turning, or maybe it comes and goes. When your brakes are grinding, it most likely means that you’re due for new brake pads and new rotors. Stingray Chevrolet has helpful information below on some scenarios and probable causes for your brakes grinding when stopping or going. It’s very likely that you will need to replace your brake pads and probably your rotors in any case, and our service department is here to help.

My Brakes are Grinding When Stopping

If your brakes are grinding when stopping, it could mean a few things:

  • Brakes grinding when stopping or slowing down means that your brake pads most likely need to be replaced. Think of your brake pads like a tire’s tread. As you use your brakes, your brake pads wear over time, needing to eventually be replaced like a tire due to wear down. Brakes will begin to squeal, something called “brake scrubbing.” You’ll begin to hear that grinding noise as your brake pads wear down even further.
  • Sharp grinding sounds could be the sound of your brake disc and calipers. Valrico drivers may also feel a rumble in the pedal. In this situation, you may be looking at a disc or rotor replacement.
  • If you’re stopping at full force and hearing a grinding sound that’s separate from the above situations, your Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) may be the cause. Your ABS will activate if you apply your full brakes, and it may even cause vibrations in the pedal.

My Brakes are Grinding When Driving

If you’re simply driving around and noticing that your brakes are making grinding noises, it may just be debris bouncing off of the caliper and rotor. While better than having to replace your brake pads or rotors, this can still cause damage to your vehicle. Our team can help with any debris trapped or accumulating in your system, and we can easily inspect your vehicle or perform an oil change while you’re here.
